Bangkok solo, 18-20 July

I've been wanting to blog about my solo Bangkok trip in July but every week there seem to be something interesting that I feel like I shouldn't keep belated. Afterall, one belated post is better than many others right?

So that was when I was still at radios. I didn't want to take leave, because Shan was on leave, but I really wanted to get out of SG so did the impulsive thing of booking a ticket for the weekend. honestly I was so tempted to book a one way flight hahaha. On the 18th, which was a Friday, headed home after my shift and lacked my luggage. My flight was due at 1735 since its a solo trip and I'd pretty much been solo ever since last year in terms of going to the airport alone with no sendoffs, and also going budget, I managed to drag my luggage (don't ask me why luggage for a short trip. My luggage is tiny!) up and down the bus and on the train, barely making it to the check in timing.

Was pretty excited to take the plane alone for the first time, but it wasn't what I had in mind. I was seated between this chinese lady and an angmoh/chinese couple, and they weren't exactly the friendliest of people. Tried striking a conversation with the chinese lady beside me but she was a conversation killer. And to make things worst, she's a hoarder!!!! Took up part of my space during the flight and also shifting in place etc disturbing my sleep. #typesofpeopleihateonboard

Reached Bangkok near 1900 BKK time, headed to take the airport link to Ratchaprarop station, one of the places I'm more familiar with because its the Pratunam area. The hotel I booked was Best Bangkok House, which was at the end of Soi 15 of Petchburi Road, which I didn't know was solo deep inside along the lanes, I was basically asking around for directions while lugging my luggage along the uneven roads of Pratunam. Not helping that the cars are crazy coming from all directions and the night market was already on, making the roads cramped and hard to walk. Finally found my way to the hotel and got shown to my room. It was small, but homely enough for my 2 nights stay. There was a bathtub too, which was what I'd been looking forward to, the soaking! But I didn't get to soak that night, because by the time i settled in it was about 830pm and coincidentally Josh was also in Bangkok and he asked to meet up to hang out for the night.

The receptionist told me that I could actually call and they have this shuttle buggy service which can brign me out to either the main road or Pratunam night market, and also back. So of course I wasn't gonna risk the dark street at that hour alone and asked for a ride out to the night market. Got myself a roadside kah pow moo an a 10 baht pork stick before hopping onto a cab to meet Josh. The cab driver was damn scary though. I asked him for meter and he said okay before I got up. but the moment I got up he told me "very far ah sister, 150baht" I said no, and said I want to go by meter else I'd get off. He tried bargaining and I was insistent and in the end he gave in, but just before he drove off, HE LOCKED THE DOORS. Obviously I got scared, I started texting Emily, and tried to hold conversations with the cab driver too to test his mood. I swear at one point I heard him say "Fuck" and my natural reaction was "huh" then he said its not me, its the cars in front or something. He is pretty young, about 25, and his command of English wasn't as bad as other cab drivers so I felt quite safe that I could hold a conversation to test his mood.

Met up with Josh and headed back to his hotel with his friend while waiting for him to get ready before meeting up with a few others to head to DJ Station, a gay club at Silom Soi 2. As usual, you can guess how excited I was cause I've always wanted to go to a gay club but no one to go with. The gay clubs in Bangkok is very different though. When we first reached to get our stamp, there were drag queens performing onstage. So we headed down few streets down to get drinks from this bar Josh always go and got ourselves 2 litres of Mojitos. It tastes really good, but its also a quiet killer. The kick came in soon after and we headed back to DJ Station, and this time the music was great and there were even topless men onstage yumz.

After a while on the dance floor, had this crazy rush to go up the stage and the guys onstage helped me up, so nice hehe. Helped the rest of the guys up and we were partying onstage! Such a great exposure in a gay club in Bangkok because there are really so many things you didn't expect to see and I thought it was damn interesting. Held conversation with one of the topless guys and he tried to dance with me. Asked if he was gay and he said "no I love women very much" and that he was only working here. And he's only 21 i think? And Josh and him took turns to lift me off the ground like a cheerleader I have no idea why but it was fun haha. Went for a toilet break and thats when the deadly mojito kicked in and I needed sleep really bad, and thankfully one of them stays near my hotel so he sent me back first. So crazy tired and tipsy that the fact that I'm sleeping alone in the hotel didn't bother me. (if you know me well enough, you'd know I'm afraid of sleeping alone)

Day 2 was pretty slack as I was still nursing my hangover and at the same time, I was falling sick. Went to MBK to fix my phone and walked around Siam and by 3pm I was tired and decided to head to my favourite massage place, Junsawang Thai Massage, the one I've been going back to ever since my first time there in June 2013. Headed back to the hotel for a nap after the massage before meeting Josh & friend for Mookata. Was a pretty chill night we headed bcd early after our dinner cause we were too tired. So it was time for a soak! Prepared my bath and put a movie on my laptop and watched it while soaking. Very very therapeutic. Fell asleep shortly after the bath, so once again, sleeping alone wasn't a problem that night.

Day 3 was a lot of crazy shopping at Pratunam market and Platinum Fashion Mall as my flight was at 2005 that night, which means I had to leave for the airport by 5 (best to reach airport 2 hours in advance) and of course I had to go for another round of massage, I insist. The flight home was better than the flight there. Was seated beside this Russian guy who was an exchange student at NTU. And we actually talked from before take off all the way till we landed. Great exchanging of knowledge from both sides - This, is what I planned my solo flights to be like, to meet people and exchange pointers and experiences.

Only regret of this trip was that I didn't manage to go for the yoga session at Lumpini Park for both days because I overslept. Shall do it the next trip!
